If 2024 taught us anything, it was to expect the unexpected. The “year of elections” had decidedly mixed results for democracy, with liberal-minded parties or leaders making important gains in some countries, and self-styled autocrats sweeping to power in others. Despite the disparate outcomes, the people themselves expressed two common themes: disaffection and a hunger for change.
The 2025 edition of the Athens Democracy Forum will be about taking stock of these forces and deciding how to harness their power. We will analyze the undeniable realities that must be reckoned with – social upheaval, economic insecurity, concurrent wars, the onslaught of tech advancements, the chaos of the climate crisis – as well as the political opportunists who might take advantage of them. We will also look at the arc of history: Is this moment really as different – and as dangerous – as some think?
But more than anything, we will look forward to the binding forces of hope. The Forum will showcase examples of democratic renewal from around the world: the movement to tap into the power of citizens to shape policy decisions; technology that takes the temperature of what people want to make governments more responsive; parliaments that draw on the wisdom of youth for fresh ideas and perspectives; and programs that encourage people to extend an olive branch, or even a hand.
Finally, to become forces to be reckoned with, we also need a vision to get us there. This is why the Athens Democracy Forum will be adding a fourth pillar to the thematic trifecta of recent years. In addition to sessions on “rethinking” key issues, regional case studies, and practical and innovative new tools, we will also be dreaming about entirely new ways of structuring (or not) society, governments and institutions.
